Welcome Thread?

Posted by Andrew

Thought it might be a nice idea for people to post in here and tell everyone a little about themselves.
No particular structure to it, just say what you like, and if you got nothing to say, well thats cool too.

I'm Andrew, if you haven't guessed from the Username. I'm 19 years old, I live up near Manchester in England, and I'm a huge Folds fan.
I've grown up with an interest in music, and I've been playing the piano for 11 years now - though I wouldn't say i'm an accomplished musician, I just enjoy playing.
The first time I heard one of Bens songs was from an old Collegehumor video about 'Metaphor-free radio'. They played Brick and changed the chorus a little bit, but the song stuck with me. I bought the song and left it at that until my last year of college (For you Americans, thats like a bit between high school and your 'college' from 16-18), at that point I just happened to stumble on the first BFF album. I was immediately blown away. I could tell these guys were great musicians, and they knew just what to add to a piece and when to add it.
I've enjoyed Bens work later on, and his progression as a musician, but there was just something about Ben Folds Five, that put them way above any band I've heard before.
At least, in my opinion.

Howdy hi!

I'm Piper, a 22-year-old person from Canada. I also play music (on occasion - I'm mostly just a singer) but I haven't done anything in the songwriting department due to a general lack of musical ability. I played piano when I was a kid ('til I was about 11) but was bored with learning the classical stuff (and the theory, thus the lack of songwriting ability)... It wasn't until I was 14/15 and saw Ben play for the first time that I picked it up again and started teaching myself his songs. I've since stopped playing piano (though I can still bust out a mean 'Brick' or 'Evaporated' when requested) and decided to stick to the 8 or so chords I can play on a guitar. I have some stuff (covers) up on MySpace (<a href="http://www.myspace.com/pipermacfadyen" title="http://www.myspace.com/pipermacfadyen">http://www.myspace.com/pipermacfadyen</a>) and YouTube (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ihatebenfolds" title="http://www.youtube.com/user/ihatebenfolds">http://www.youtube.com/user/ihatebenfolds</a>), but it's all pretty old as of now. I haven't had much free time since this whole having a boring job and being a grown-up thing started happening... Blerg.

Looking forward to receiving the Retrospective in the mail! Woo!

Thanks! Once you do get a microphone, be sure to let us know; it'd be great to hear what you've got.

I haven't got anything uploaded to the internet yet, I am in need of a microphone but when I get one I will start to record them. I listened to your songs and they are really good, Kevin! (and yes they do have a sort of Elton John feel to them)

Lois

Welcome Lois, no need to feel self-conscious. And from these first few posts, there seems to be a good trend going of pianist/songwriters here! Do you have anything you've written out on the Internet so we can listen?
-Kevin

Hi everyone, I'm Lois, I live in England and I am 16 years old. I have been a fan of Ben Folds for about a year now. I also play the piano and started to learn when I was 10. I also write songs, its cool to hear that lots of people on here write songs and play the piano too. The welcome thread is a good idea! If there isn't one on a forum I sometimes feel a bit self conscious when making a first post.

Yes, I take all of those as compliments. Thanks a lot! Hopefully in the coming months I'll be able to start recording more of my own stuff, which definitely has a lot more of that Folds/Elton influence to it. Not that it's anywhere near that quality, mind you.

Dude that's some good stuff. Never mind Ben Folds, I got a hint of Elton John in some of those songs(I hope you take that as a compliment haha). Either way, I really like the chord progression in the songs. That's where I always fall flat - I can get the lyrics but struggle with the melody.
Fruits of Our Neighbours is my current favourite. And the Wolf Whistle song made me laugh, sounds like a bit of a Lucy in the Sky track if you know what I mean.

One of the greatest impacts Ben's had on me is on my songwriting. It was because of him that I was inspired/enabled to make the jump from writing little diddies on the piano to full-on songs. Honestly, I'd describe my music as just like Ben's, except much worse. Haha.

As far as listening my stuff, there are a few places you can. Currently I'm in a "band" with a few friends, in quotation marks because we just mess around in my basement and record songs. Just silly stuff, nothing serious really. But I play a good amount of the instruments, as well as sing and mix it all together. You can listen to those songs here, if you'd like:

I have a bunch of stuff I've written just on my own as well, which really demonstrates my statement of how my style is Ben's except worse. I don't have any of that recorded though, since I'm involved with the "band." I do have 2 songs I've recorded playing everything though, 1 written-and-recorded-all-in-one-day original and 1 cover. Those can be viewed on my YouTube channel here:

Sorry for such a long-winded response to a simple question!

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Kevin.
I can totally understand what you mean when you say that Ben has inspired you. Heck, if it wasn't for Ben I probably wouldn't be playing the piano anymore!
Has there also been an influence on your songwriting? I'd love to hear your stuff, if you've got it online somewhere.

Great idea, Andrew. I'm Kevin, also apparent from the username. I don't know exactly when I first heard Ben's music, but most likely it was in Over the Hedge. He has grown over the past few years to be my all-time favorite artist and an incredible inspiration to me. I'm 18 and I've been playing piano since I was 5. Along with learning a bunch of Ben's songs by ear, I write my own stuff. In addition to playing music, I also enjoy anime, playing Zelda, and soccer.

That's about all from me. For now, anyway.
