The Metro (UK) ran a piece on June 22, 2008 called "The pros and cons of Ben Folds" written by Nadine McBay that had some pros (and cons - boo!) of Ben Folds. Here's a sampling:
"
Pro: Ben Folds is one of the best live showmen on the circuit. You haven't witnessed proper rock'*'roll tomfoolery until you've seen a man play a grand piano upside down. "
"
Pro: At a previous show, Folds finished a song by standing 30 feet from his baby grand, before hurling a stool across the stage to land with a horrifying crunch on the keyboard.
Con: He really ought to take more care of his instruments."
"
Pro: He's one of the few performers who hasn't mellowed significantly since leaving his old band to go it alone. His solo shows, almost always with a bassist and drummer in tow, sound more or less identical to how his former Ben Folds Five project did."
"
Pro: He inspires a similar sort of crazed devotion and affection from his sizeable UK fan base as Weezer. A Ben Folds show is a warming communal experience.
Con: If you're just curious, you risk feeling horribly alienated. Make sure you learn at least a few choruses. "
Bonnaroo Day 3
"Ben Folds was supposed to play in the same time slot as B.B. King on another stage, but they bumped his show back half an hour at the last minute, so I managed to catch the last few songs. I’ve seen Folds perform a few times before, and every time I’m stunned at just how hard he rocks the Baldwin grand piano he plays. At Bonnaroo he was in fine form, taking time to teach the audience harmony parts to stand-out tracks like “Army,” which he then conducted while standing on top of the piano. This is pop music at its most satisfying."

"
I'll be honest -- I went to see Ben Folds. The fact that John Mayer was headlining Sunday night's show at Saratoga Performing Arts Center seemed, at first, like a tragic by-product of some sort of rock ‘n roll dyslexia. In a perfect world, Mayer would play second fiddle.
Ben Folds strikes me as the geek who made good. He's a musician's musician whose compositions bear a complexity similar to musical theatre. He's tortured but talented. He thinks three measures ahead at all times. He pens witty lyrics and harmonizes like a doo-wop king in perfect falsetto.
Not to mention, Folds can lay down a tasty groove while throwing a punk rock tantrum. And really, what's cooler than that?
Folds and his bandmates, including drummer Sam Smith of Albany, burned through a version of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service that had the singer upright straddling his keyboard and slapping it wildly. He punctuated his set by hurling a stool into a baby grand piano."

"
Folds rocked through his all-too-short, high-energy 45-minute set, quickly moving from song to song so as to squeeze as many tunes into his set as possible. The frenetic Folds and his guitar-less trio amped it up from the start, blowing through Folds' turbo-charged, quirky pop with a breathless intensity that added to the immediacy of his music.
Pushing his piano bench away, Folds was on his feet for about half the set, pounding away at his piano on songs such as "Bastard," "Gone," and "Underground." Folds was playing so hard that he actually broke a piano string. And he immersed himself in his performance, mumbling a few words into the microphone between songs before blasting into the next selection. He ended the show by throwing his piano stool at the piano.
Vocally, Folds' tenor was perfection, seamlessly blending with his band's Beach Boys-style harmonies. Folds impressed on Sunday night. "
